Dinero Teens: Tap. Done. Did You Even Notice You Spent It?

Two teenage girls paying for coffee with a credit card

You grab a coffee before school. Tap. Order food with friends. Tap. Buy a snack after school. Tap.

When your debit card is stored in your phone or digital wallet, you don't have to pull out cash, count your money or even reach for your actual card. That's convenient—but it can also make spending feel almost invisible.

Think about it: handing someone a $20 bill and getting $3 back feels different than tapping your phone for $17. With a digital wallet, the purchase is over in seconds, but the same $17 still left your account.

That doesn't mean digital wallets are bad. They're convenient, and they can include helpful security features. The trick is making sure easy spending doesn't turn into unnoticed spending.

One way to do that is to make your purchases visible again. Turn on transaction alerts so your phone notifies you when money leaves your account. Then instead of tap and forget, you'll see exactly what you spent.

You can also use card controls to help manage your debit card and quickly take action if your card is lost or you notice something that doesn't look right.

Try This: For one week, pay attention to every spending notification you receive. At the end of the week, look back and ask yourself: Do I remember making every purchase—and was each one worth it?

Remember: Your phone may make paying easier, but you're still in control of where your money goes.
